Supreme, Dunkin’ Donuts, Hidden Valley: This Week in Food News

Supreme Teams Up with Oreo

In the latest of brand partnerships, Supreme teamed up with Oreo to bring consumers a Supreme Oreo cookie. The Oreo cookie will now take on a red hue synonymous with the luxury brand. One pack of three Supreme Oreos will retail for a whopping $8 as reported by multiple sources. I’m not on the Supreme hype train so you can definitely count me out on this one. Excuse me while I go buy a full size pack of Oreos for $3.

Dunkin’ Donuts in Chocolate Form

Dunkin’ Donuts plans to expand further into the candy arena with their new coffee bars. At 210 calories a pop, these creamy coffee treats combine chocolate and caffeine. It appears the coffee bars will be available in four flavors: Original, Hazelnut, French Vanilla, and Caramel. I am curious to try a candy bar that, “Looks like chocolate [and] Tastes like coffee.” For the amount of calories per bar, I may just opt for a regular latte instead.

Bring on the Hidden Valley Ranch Secret Sauce

Hidden Valley Ranch is bringing out the big guns with the new secret sauce. There are three varieties including original, smokehouse, and spicy. I wonder if this will be like any other secret sauce which usually tastes like thousand island dressing. Nevertheless, I am here for it. These sauces will hit Walmart stores beginning April 2020.

You can find these new ice cream pints beginning March 2020.

The original flavors debuted in the fall and are absolutely to die for! You would think that the chunks would be hard to eat since they are kept in the freezer; quite the contrary. Is Disney+ Really Worth Buying?

Buckle up Disney fans; Disney+ is finally here.

It’s been nearly one week since the new streaming platform launched and caused quite a stir. Although I originally said I would wait to try Disney+, I signed up the day it came out. Now I am nearing the end of the free trial period and am left to decide: Should I keep or cancel my Disney+ subscription?

Disney+ Home Screen

There are two ways to get Disney+:

  1. Subscribe to Disney+ for only $6.99 per month
  2. Get Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for $12.99 per month

Since I already have a Hulu account through a separate offer, I simply subscribed to Disney+ alone. Disney+ has nearly every Disney movie and TV show that you can think of including all the classic films in the vault and a collection of Disney channel originals. Due to prior agreements, some providers including Netflix and HBO still have rights to Disney movies that are not currently available on Disney+.

Many people have criticized Disney+ for issues with buffering and other interruptions. I also experienced some buffering and received error messages that stopped my movie altogether. While these interruptions were an inconvenience, it did not greatly affect my viewing experience. However, Disney will have to fix these bugs immediately and have released statements saying they are working to address these issues.

I will admit; I have been hooked on Disney+ for the past week. Despite the buffering issues, I continue to turn on Disney+ and search through the huge catalog of movies and TV shows available on the platform. You may think Disney+ is just for children, but I can assure you it is not. The platform hosts content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic all in one place.

As someone who has Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Disney+; there are so many options to choose from. Disney+ stacks up well against the competition in my opinion, especially if you are a true Disney fan. It always annoyed me that Disney kept a whole host of movies locked away in the “vault” and pawned them off during special releases. With Disney+ I can access all the movies in the vault and so much more.

Will I continue my Disney+ subscription? Absolutely.

Disney+ offers so much content that it will take much more than a week for me to cull through. I have thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgia I experienced while watching all my favorite childhood movies. From Disney Channel originals to princess movies and more; Disney+ has reignited my love for Disney. Don’t just take my word for it, get a 7-day free trial here.

Trying Out the New Pillsbury Sweet Biscuits

The all-new Pillsbury Sweet Biscuits combine parts of three fan-favorite Pillsbury products; biscuits, muffins, and cinnamon rolls. These sweet biscuits make for a quick, 15-minute breakfast treat or dessert. Pillsbury recently launched two varieties of the sweet biscuits: Blueberry and Chocolate Chip.

Each container of Pillsbury Sweet Biscuits contains eight biscuits and a small container of icing, similar to Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls. What I enjoy most about Pillsbury products is that literally anyone can make them. No additional ingredients are required; you simply place the biscuits on a sheet pan and pop them in the oven.

In addition, Pillsbury offers an abundance of recipes to transform these products even further. For example, you can create monkey bread, pull-apart bread, and even biscuit waffles with these Pillsbury Sweet Biscuits. The same applies for any other Pillsbury products, but don’t just take my word for it, go check out the website!

Pillsbury Blueberry Sweet Biscuits

I decided to buy the blueberry-flavored sweet biscuits and baked them as the package instructed. In just under 15 minutes, I opened the oven to perfectly browned biscuits. Next, I drizzled the glaze over the biscuits, but not nearly as well as depicted on the packaging.

To be completely honest, these Pillsbury Sweet Biscuits were not my all-time favorite dessert. While I enjoy biscuits and dessert foods separately, I cannot see myself consistently choosing biscuits as a dessert. The biscuits did not taste bad by any means. In fact, I enjoyed the fluffy blueberry inside accompanied with the taste of sweet icing. However, I prefer a muffin of cinnamon roll over a biscuit if I am searching for a dessert.

I do plan on trying the Chocolate Chip Pillsbury Sweet Biscuits in the future, but this time I want to attempt one of the recipes on Pillsbury’s website. Aside from my personal preferences, I think these sweet biscuits are pretty tasty and they smell great while baking. Check out the Pillsbury Sweet Biscuits on your next grocery run!

REVIEW: Chipotle’s New Carne Asada

Oh Chipotle. Home of burrito bowls, mountains of guacamole, and now carne asada; well at least for a limited time. This quick service Mexican restaurant giant operates nearly 2500 locations worldwide and consumes 57% of the market share of “limited service Mexican restaurants” in the United States (Statista).

As reported by the Nation’s Restaurant News, Chipotle’s carne asada is, “Seasoned with spices including cumin and coriander and finished with lime and chopped cilantro.” Carne asada is the newest protein to grace the menu since chorizo, which joined the menu for a limited time in September of 2018.

Over the years, I have lost my affinity for Chipotle. In Texas, we have a local chain called Freebirds, which essentially provides the same offerings as Chipotle, but at much higher quality in my opinion. Due to the better offerings and sheer convenience, I tend to visit Freebirds much more frequently than Chipotle. However, the introduction of carne asada at Chipotle could be just the thing I needed to change that.

Chipotle introduces carne asada to the menu

My traditional Chipotle order consists of a burrito bowl with steak, so carne asada was not much of a stretch for me. In fact, I love carne asada and frequently order it at restaurants or buy it pre-marinated at the grocery store. On this particular Chipotle run, I ordered my regular burrito bowl with carne asada and a side of chips before sitting down ready to review it.

Immediately, I could tell that this meat was drenched in salt and lime juice. The lime taste overpowered all other spices on the meat and in the bowl itself. This is more of a personal preference, but I also prefer the meat to be cut in cubes like the traditional steak, not strips. When compared to the regular steak, Chipotle’s carne asada is more tender and does not have the fat and gristle like the other offering.

Overall, I was quite underwhelmed. I really wanted this carne asada to give me reason to return to Chipotle, but it just wasn’t enough. The lime juice on the meat completely masked all other spices and flavors in my burrito bowl. If Chipotle changed the carne asada marinade to reduce the lime and showcase all the other great spices, I would consider giving it another try. Until then, I will stick to another source of protein for my Chipotle burrito bowls.

The Truth About Pillsbury’s Place & Bake Brownies

We all know and love those delightful Pillsbury sugar cookies with festive designs perfect for nearly any holiday. Did you know Pillsbury recently debuted the latest product in a long line of quick, easy desserts?

Introducing the new Pillsbury Place & Bake Brownies.

These new Place & Bake Brownies make baking even more simple and include 12 brownie pieces ready to pop right in the oven without any mess. The brownies come in a few varieties: Chocolate Fudge, Peanut Butter, and Marshmallow. While I wanted to try all of them, I had to settle for the Chocolate Fudge brownies because my local Target did not carry the others. Regardless, I bought the brownies and headed home eager to test them out.

This product is very similar to the other Pillsbury desserts in that they are ready to bake right out of the package. What I love most about Pillsbury is that even the most novice baker can make these desserts. Opening the package, it was interesting to see the brownie pucks all packed together. I resisted the urge to eat the brownie dough and moved on to breaking apart the brownie rounds and placing them in a muffin pan.

It does specify on the package that you should place the brownie rounds into baking cups, but of course I ran out, so half of the brownies had baking cups and the other half did not. In the end, this did not make a difference and I found the brownies easy to remove even without the baking cups. The package also says to bake the brownies at 350 degrees for 20 to 22 minutes; however, I let them bake a couple minutes longer because they were not completely done in the middle. I recommend baking the brownies for the initial 20 minutes and then adding time if necessary, as ovens may vary.

Whether you enjoy baking or not, the Pillsbury Place & Bake Brownies are perfect if you need a quick dessert. Forget all the preparation time and dirty dishes, the Pillsbury Place & Bake Brownies provide a delicious treat without all the hassle. There are so many ways to spruce these brownies up including adding marshmallows, cookie dough, and more. I placed Oreo cookies under half of the brownies, and it was amazing! Even though I could not try the other variations, I will be on the lookout to try them in the future. I highly recommend you give these brownies a try on your next grocery trip.
